Make Way for Grey Nomads

19 September 2009

THEY are experienced, mature, well travelled and the new group being snatched up by Australian employers.

The seasonal employment sector may once have belonged to the young generation of international and domestic travellers.

But these days, it appears the grey nomads are the new bloomers when it comes to the job scene.

Statistics from the Queensland government indicate that older workers represent the fastest growing segment of the workforce.

It is believed that by 2012, 85% of labour market growth will come from people aged 45 years and older.

And information from the government points to studies which show that people older than 45 stay longer in their jobs, contribute to the long term performance of a company, have low levels of absenteeism and are flexible in their working hours and conditions.

Age diversity in an organisation is also widely regarded as a sound business strategy.

It seems many mature Australian couples are packing up and seeing where the road will lead them.
